Natural First Aid

As a mother of three active children, I know how often accidents happen while playing sports or just simply playing in the backyard. Not a summer goes by without my kids experiencing some sort of minor trauma. Children can be particularly susceptible to sports injuries, especially children under the age of eight who tend to be less coordinated and have a slower reaction time than older children. Also, children tend to not judge or assess well the risks of certain situations that can end in an injury. Here are some homeopathic solutions to keep on hand this summer:

  • Arnica – For my family and my patients, I have found Arnica to be the single most important natural remedy for bumps, bruises and sore muscles. Arnica helps pain relief for a variety of injuries, including muscle strains and sprains, bruises and black eyes.
  • Ruta graveolens – Ruta graveolens is another important homeopathic medicine for strains and sprains. And, homeopathic Bellis perennis can help reduce swelling and soreness of deep bruises.
  • Hypericum – Another important remedy, Hypericum is excellent for injuries to areas rich in nerves such as fingers, toes, and genitals.
  • Hyland’s Bumps ʹn Bruises – Bumps ʹn Bruises is a combination homeopathic medicine that contains all of the individual homeopathic medicines I just mentioned. With this combination of remedies, Bumps ʹn Bruises helps relieve bruising, swelling and pain associated with injuries. For many people, the combination remedies are a simple and easy way to use homeopathy.

Hyland’s Bumps ʹn Bruises also comes in a topical form containing Arnica. This is nice to have on hand to apply to an area that is bruised but does not have an open wound. It is safe to use both the oral and topical homeopathic medicines simultaneously. Rest and ice are also generally a good addition to treating injuries. If your child is participating in sports this summer, remind him to stretch before sports activities and talk to your child about rules, safety, and proper use of protective equipment to help reduce the chance of injuries.
