Courtney Thompson

Two-Time Olympic Medalist in Volleyball

AGE 32
OCCUPATION Volleyball Player (Retired)

Meet Courtney

Courtney is a very good indoor volleyball player. She’s been an Olympian twice, in 2012 and 2016, both times bringing home medals. In 2014, she won the Volleyball Women’s World Championship. In college, playing for the University of Washington, she won the 2005 national championship. You get the idea: she’s very good at volleyball.

You would not, however, say that Courtney is a very good runner. “The extent of my running in the last 15 years has been about 30 seconds at a time,” she says. To be fair, volleyball is a sport that requires lightning quick reflexes and explosive action. You could not be a professional volleyball player if you were also an endurance athlete simply because they require different body mechanics.

While Courtney used to travel the world playing and competing, her guilty pleasure was watching YouTube videos and documentaries on Ironman races and 100 milers.

She found herself drawn to people pushing themselves to their limits. It was very much like her own philosophy towards life, “When I decide to do something, I throw myself at it.”

When she retired from volleyball, she knew exactly what she wanted to do. She was going to run and run far. Boston will be Courtney’s first marathon. It is a very fitting place for her to start the next chapter of her amazing athletic career. You just know, she’s going to be a very good runner.

Courtney proudly supports the Women’s Sports Foundation. Check them out on:
