Meet Ilene

Ilene has been happily married for 37 years, has two kids and three grandchildren. She has been a lactation consultant for over 30 years. Her passion is her family and her work. Running? Well, she only started running 4 years ago when she ran a 5k with her daughter. She was 54 years old at the time.

Within just the last 4 years, she has run 22 half marathons, 6 full marathons and is an ambassador for Ragnar Relay races. To say that her life has been transformed by running is an understatement. Several years ago, Ilene’s father passed away and amidst the grief, she experienced a moment of self-reflection. She weighed 275 pounds at the time and realized she had to turn things around. She lost 125 pounds and running became the pivotal thing that has kept her on track. She credits it for saving her life.

This year’s Boston Marathon will be Ilene’s third time at the race. She hopes to inspire women like her. She says, “I’m just an everyday person with a lot of determination. Anyone can change their life. You can do it.”

Ilene, herself, finds inspiration from other runners around her. She founded the South of Boston chapter of Moms Run This Town. She loves meeting people and sees running as her social outlet in life. Almost all of her marathons, she has run with her friend and running buddy, Laurie (who is also on our team).

Ilene describes running with Laurie as a chance to “share with words and share without words.” She feels like she has “shared a piece of my soul.” Without a doubt, together, they can do anything and both will be at the starting line together in Boston this year.
