Healthworks Community Fitness 5K Caps Months of Training for Women from Low-Income Neighborhoods
April 8, 2013 – Dorchester, MA – As world-class athletes prepare to compete in the Boston Marathon, a group of women from low-income Boston neighborhoods will run their first race, the Healthworks Community Fitness Fun Run/Walk 5K on Saturday, April 13th in Dorchester. Sponsored by Hyland’s, a leading manufacturer in homeopathic products, the race caps training provided by Healthworks’ Community Fitness Running Club, a free program that provides running coaching to women who wouldn’t otherwise have access to fitness opportunities. Over 40 club members, ranging in age from early twenties to fifties, are expected to participate. Area doctors will also be joining in on the run/walk. The race gets underway at 10 a.m. at the Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade in Dorchester and all are welcome to participate.
“Meeting, running with, and mentoring the Healthworks women has been an inspiring experience,” says Jan Holmquist of the New England 65 Plus Running Club, a coach who has been working with the group. “It is so exciting to see their energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to getting fitter and faster.” The participants have also trained with fitness coaches Mike Ehredt and Michelle Jezycki of Hyland’s Masters Athlete program. The coaches, both world-class athletes, will run the race along with their trainees.
"For many of the participants, this race is part of an overall lifestyle change to manage health issues and promote well-being. It’s also an opportunity for women to accomplish a collective goal, enjoy the outdoors, and celebrate physical activity,” says Lauren Broadhurst, Healthworks Community Fitness Executive Director. Many of the participants are referred to Healthworks Community Fitness by their doctors because of health issues.
