SAFE, NATURAL ALLERGY RELIEF

April showers bring May flowers…
As nature comes alive after the long winter, so do all the allergens that cause runny noses and eyes, sneezing, and all sorts of reactions. According to both the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA)1 and the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI)2 , as many as 35 million Americans suffer from seasonal allergy symptoms each year. If you or someone in your family is among these, we would like to guide you through how homeopathy can be an excellent choice to help manage those nasty symptoms and how consumers are turning toward it more and more all across the country.

A little bit of background on seasonal allergies

Seasonal allergies are typically referred to those that are caused by tiny particles of airborne pollen that are breathed in through the nose – such as tree pollen in the spring, grass pollen in the summer and weed pollen in the fall. Some people are also affected by mold spores – another seasonal pest that can be present from spring through late fall. So depending on where you live and the climate in your region that year, allergy season can range from mild to severe. For instance, for those who live in a warm climate and suffer from mold spore allergies, symptoms can last all year since mold spores thrive in warm weather.

Some interesting facts & statistics

  • Allergies do have a genetic link. When one parent has allergies, there is a 1 in 3 chance that their children will too. If both parents have allergies, the chances increase to 7 in 10. 3

  • The AAFA claims that allergies are "among the most common, yet overlooked, diseases" in America.

  • It's been calculated that 4 million workdays a year are either missed or lost due to adults suffering from hay fever - representing a total cost of more than $700 million lost in productivity. 4

  • The AAFA also states that American children are missing 2 million school days each year because of allergy symptoms.

  • Of the 17 million outpatient visits each year for allergy sufferers, seasonal allergies account for over half of those visits. 5

What can be done to prevent it?

So the problem is not one to ignore, with far reaching effects on the daily lives of those suffering with the symptoms and for their families. Experts agree that there is no known cure for allergies, but much can be done to ease the symptoms and prevent them from getting worse.

Both the AAAAI and AAFA offer some simple guidelines that can help lessen the exposure to allergens and mold spores during the height of allergy season. Here are some of them:

  • Do a thorough spring cleaning: a lot of dust and mold collect throughout the winter.

  • Know your local pollen and mold count – the National Allergy Board gives a record of these counts 3 times a week for most areas across the country . Also find out if you live in one of the allergy capitals of America.6

  • Keep windows closed - especially if you see a film of pollen on the frame or sill. Use air filters or air conditioning if possible, and remember to change the filters regularly.

  • When traveling by car, keep windows up and air conditioning on.

  • Stay indoors on hot, dry and windy days

  • Don't hang your laundry out to dry. Allergens will collect on them.

  • Do not mow the lawn, rake the leaves or even be outside without a facemask when the pollen and mold count is high. The facemask will help diminish the amount of pollen you breathe in.

  • Wash bedding often in hot water.

  • Shower and wash your hair every night before going to bed.

  • Mold spores thrive in moisture: Fix all leaks inside and out, and clean moldy surfaces regularly – especially in bathrooms and kitchens.

  • Mold spore counts are high after a heavy rain and in the evening.

  • Limit the number of household plants which carry both pollen and mold.

Homeopathy & Allergies

Dana Ullman, founder of Homeopathic Educational Services7 , gives an interesting anecdote on how a British homeopath of the 19th century first recognized that exposure to pollen caused sneezing and nasal discharges. Ullman also points out that an American homeopath was one of three physicians who founded the current AAAAI. The very roots of recognizing and treating allergies are deeply rooted in homeopathy.

Much has also been said about how conventional medicine has borrowed from homeopathy by treating allergy symptoms with small doses of the allergen. Homeopathy does the same – but in much smaller, infinitesimal doses.

Even the AAFA acknowledges the findings of experts showing that 40% of Americans seek alternative medicines to help alleviate allergy symptoms.

Mainstream media along with the more traditional medical field continue to report on the benefits and growing consumer demand for homeopathic treatment. Just recently on the local NBC Baltimore television station, Dr. Mimi Palenque, a naturopathic doctor at the Medispa at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore was commenting on how homeopathy can help alleviate allergy symptoms and that more and more people are seeking alternative treatments for allergies .8

In the Question & Answer section of the acclaimed and highly respected Prevention Magazine, Dr. Andrew Weil, clinical professor of Medicine at the University of Arizona and director of its Program in Integrative Medicine, offers advice to a reader seeking natural relief for her allergy symptoms after using conventional medicines that make her drowsy. He explains to the reader that "for many people, homeopathy can be the last, best hope for ending allergy symptoms without side effects. Unlike the medications you mentioned, homeopathy can actually change the way your body responds to allergens, instead of merely suppressing the symptoms they cause." 9

A former alternative medicine editor for Prevention Magazine also wrote an article on how out of sheer desperation she consulted a homeopath to help solve decades of allergy problems. Within a few days she was, and still is – symptom free. She calls it her "instant allergy cure"! 10

How to Use Homeopathy

Homeopathy is a natural approach to medicine that stimulates the body’s curative response to heal itself. Homeopathy works on the principle of “like cures like” – specific symptoms are resolved when the conditions are matched with the substances that create those same effects. To select a homeopathic medicine, you need to match your symptoms with the indications on the Drug Facts panel on the back of the carton. Do you have a runny nose and tearing eyes?
