As Unemployment Rises, a Good Night’s Sleep Is Hard to Find

Hyland’s. Inc. Sleep Survey Findings in Line with National Unemployment Rates

(January 13, 2009) – At a time when unemployment has soared to a 14-year high, it is no surprise that a lack of shut-eye coincides with a lack of work. In a national sleep survey conducted for Hyland’s, Inc., a leading provider of over-the-counter homeopathic medicines, the West and Midwest regions of the country reported the highest need for more sleep each night. These same regions, according to the Bureau of Labor, also are reporting the highest jobless rates.

According to the sleep survey, the overall economy was reported as the leading cause of stress nationwide, with several geographic areas reporting a need for more sleep at night. When asked if they needed more sleep each night, 73% of Midwest respondents said that additional sleep would be beneficial. Likewise, of those surveyed from the West, 63% long for more rest. Interestingly, these regions also have the highest unemployment rates, with 6.9 and 7.3% respectively. In comparison, the region with the least need for sleep, the East Coast, also has the lowest rate of unemployment, at 6.1%.

“With the economy now in a deep recession, Americans are left with more to worry about, consequently losing critical sleep,” said Dr. Alcibiades Rodriguez, M.D., Medical Director of the New York University Sleep Institute and Assistant Professor of Neurology at NYU School of Medicine. “Those who experience anxiety and stress are more likely to disturb their normal sleeping patterns. Stress interferes with the body’s natural rhythm, inhibiting relaxation.”

In determining their sleep patterns, 18% of respondents from the West, and 20% from the Midwest claimed to wake up during the night and have trouble falling back to sleep. These regions had the highest percentage of this pattern.  family.

Hyland’s is working to help people achieve the rest and relaxation they require with the launch of their new website, www.idreamofsleep.com . “The site allows you to monitor your personal sleep habits and uncover techniques to improve your sleep,” said J.P.
